I can't tell you how refreshing it was to sit amongst other teachers and professionals who were CHOOSING to participate in an activity to better themselves and their students. We have volunteered an hour of our time twice a month for the purpose of discussing a text that has the potential to help us reach a greater goal: better vocabulary instruction. The text we are studying is Word Wise & Content Rich: Five Essential Steps to Teaching Academic Vocabulary by Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey. We don't have a leader, there is no "homework", there isn't even the occasional responsibility to provide a baked good.
